Ryder Cup March 2010.
The Borders Barmy Army would like to thank Mr Rooney and George the Groundsman from Monksford Estate for allowing us to use their sensational course and for supporting us yet again with our challenge to run the 1st Virgin London Marathon and raise money for Whizz-kidz.
Once again the course was breath-taking, the weather was great and over 40 golfers played a fantastic 2 day Ryder cup style event that was eventually won by team captain Ian Hyslop and his team of 20 from Earlston.

A lot of activity was detected including unexplained sounds, lights and the table tipping at the end had very interesting results.

- Unexplained voices

Ceilidh Saturday 6th February 2010.
We held a Ceilidh at the Selkirk Victoria Hall with Scottish band Kilter. Great fun was had by all, Kilter entertained us by talking us through all those Scottish country dances that some of us haven't experienced since school days. The stovies and sandwiches supplied by the Woll golf club, who also ran the bar, were delicious and a welcome energy boost (and rest) before the second half. There was a prize raffle with various meal/beauty/wine vouchers up for grabs.
Kiltathon Saturday 14th November 2009.
The Borders Barmy Army ran on a treadmill in Tesco in our trademark KILTS!!! for 10 hours and, thanks to the generosity of all shoppers, raised a massive £1200.79 for Whizz Kidz. The treadmill run was also a good training session although, with no showers, the area around the treadmill was becoming more and more niffy as the day went on.

20 mile sponsored hill walk
15 of us embarked on a 20 mile sponsored hill walk on Sunday 26th April 2009 for Cancer Research UK. And, yes, we walked in our Kilts, from Dryhope near St Marys loch to Selkirk via the Three Brethern.

What was it like?
It ranged from a decent long walk through to a bloomin hard walk leaving me with sore feet right through to aaaaahhhh!!
Never let it be said however, that a walk in a kilt is uncomfortable or too hot or cold because when we heated up with exertion going up the hill, the brisk wind under the kilt cooled us right down.
When stopped at the half way point at Traquair, the seasoned walkers who were also doing the walk told us that the worst was still to come and that the hill out of Traquair was quite hard. "Quite hard"......, "quite hard"... MeThinks they were prone to quite a bit of under exaggeration because the hill out of Traquair was a b***** of a hill. Once up top however, the views made it all worthwhile - the Scottish Borders really are beautiful.
Highlights
- The beautiful views.
- The banter.
- The feeling of achievement when Selkirk cricket club came into view.
- And, of course, the cold beer or two at the end.
- The tweed valley mountain rescue team based at strategic points making us feel safe.
- The weather.
Pre-marathon events
May 2008: We jumped off Penielheugh, a 150 foot tower nr Jedburgh in the Scottish Borders, and slid along a 1000 foot zip wire at FAST miles per hour. But..... there's a twist.
We done it in our Kilts, yes you heard right, our Kilts and let me tell you, it was a windy day that day.
Paul Mellor on the radio - td1radio.co.ukBorders Barmy Army member Paul Mellor was on td1radio recently talking about his days as a band front man in Glasgow. The band was called Cutler and they had a bit of a cult following in the cities pubs and clubs. Paul performed live in the studio here at td1radio - he also talked about the Borders Barmy Army's preparation for next year's London Marathon where 10 of us will be running in our kilts .
